PIGEON TYPES

Pigeon is a French word taken from the Latin pipio, which means "peeping" chick. Pigeon bird is short-necked and stout-bodied birds carrying short slender bills which feature fleshy ceres in certain species. They feed mainly on seeds, herbs, and fruits. The family of such birds exists worldwide, but in the Indomalayan and Australasian realms, the greatest diversity is observed. Columbidae is a family of birds that includes doves and pigeons. It is the only family found in the Columbiformes Order.

Approximately, 250 species of pigeon bird are reported amongst which two-thirds are found in Australia, tropical Southeast Asia, and the western Pacific islands. Further, in Africa and South America, the family has several other members, and some in North America and temperate Eurasia.

PIGEON TYPES

The life of a pigeon depends on many factors, including whether it's in captivity or the wild, and its diet, health, and environment.

Lifespan
  • In captivity: Pigeons can live up to 15–20 years with proper care.
  • In the wild: Pigeons typically live 3–4 years, but can live up to 6 years.
Factors that affect lifespan
  • Predation: Cats, birds of prey, and other predators can shorten a pigeon's life.
  • Human interaction: Human intervention can impact a pigeon's lifespan.
  • Disease: Diseases like paramyxovirus and canker can shorten a pigeon's life.

Columbidae is a bird family consisting of doves and pigeons. It is the only family in the order Columbiformes. The Egyptian Swift is a breed of fancy pigeon developed over many years of selective breeding. The name swift was given by reason of a resemblance to the bird of that name.[1] Egyptian Swifts, along with other varieties of domesticated pigeons, are all descendants from the rock pigeon (Columba livia). The breed is known for its long wings and tail and its short beak. The flying Egyptian Swift is one or two inches shorter than a show Egyptian Swift.

In Egypt the standards passed on for many generations. The most veteran fanciers of a neighbourhood act as judges to settle differences among beginners. That system worked adequately and led to regional varieties of the breed. The main local groups are: Safi, Otati, Anbary Asmar, Ahmar Gohzar, Bolk, Mesawed, Rehani, Karakandy, Absy, Halaby, Egyptian Halaby, Egyptian Absy and Kojook.[2]जानकार

PIGEON FOOD

Our knowledge of bird nutrition is constantly evolving, both from heightened awareness of the importance of nutrition and from increased research into birds’ different needs. As with all other animals, birds need a proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. Different species of birds often require dsting birds, and breeding birds. The problem with offering pigeons and doves diets containing seeds is that they selectively eat only the seeds and do not get any of the nutritional benefits from the pellets.

"Seeds can be part of a pigeon’s diet but should not comprise the entire diet."

Pelleted Diets

Several types of commercially formulated pelleted diets in various colors, shapes, and sizes have been developed to meet all birds’ nutritional needs. Compared with parrots (hook-billed birds), pigeons and doves have very small beaks and do best with small-sized pellets. Hand raised babies are the easiest to start on a pelleted diet. Pellets should ideally represent approximately 50% of a pigeon's diet along with small amounts of seed and fresh produce.

Fruits and Vegetables

Finely chopped vegetables and greens, plus smaller amounts of fruit, should be offered as part of a pigeon’s or dove’s daily diet. Pale vegetables, with a high water composition (i.e., iceberg or head lettuce, celery) offer very little nutritional value and should not be offeredAvocado is reported to be potentially toxic to birds and should not be offered.ifferent foods.
